Before I left, I decided to write this music down on paper and give it to my dad, sort of as a going away present. So that was my first composition. Last year, I studied jazz theory with Russell Schmidt at the University of Utah. What a fun class that was! I like the fact that the pieces are all different, with some being a little crazy. It is the craziness that makes them so much fun.

I made changes to this piece several times over the intervening years, and finally came up with the version that is included in Volume 1. Which is the top honor in the instrumental category.
